Does your body feel relaxed? Is your skin firm or smooth and does it give off a healthy glow? If you answered, "No," to those questions then perhaps it is time to think about a body treatment. You deserve it and your body will benefit from it.

Whether you are being wrapped in mud or getting a revitalizing massage with a scrub, not only do these treatments feel good and so very soothing, but they offer so much beauty and health benefits and they give you that chance to unwind and relax with that smile on your face and releasing a deep, content sigh and believe me, that is something we all need from time to time.

“What are the benefits of body treatments?”

Let's find out by reading on, shall we?

Body Scrub

Body Scrub

It's all about exfoliation here. You will receive a vigorous rub from the therapist, from your shoulders down to your feet ( be sure to speak up if you want certain areas of your body skipped, like your stomach ). Scrubs are often a grainy mixture that often includes ingredients such as sugar, coffee grounds, and/or salts which helps remove the dead skin from your body. The friction from the scrub will not only improve circulation in your body, but it will also leave you feeling energized. Often, body scrubs will end with a short massage with moisturizing oils, butter or creams that penetrate deeply after the exfoliation is done.

Tip: Try skipping on shaving at least 12 to 24 hours before getting a scrub as it can irritate freshly shaved skin and do avoid a scrub all together if you are sunburned or have any open cuts or wounds.

Body Mask

Body Mask

Very similar to a facial mask, a body mask is a thick paste or cream like mixture made from plants, fruits, minerals, and other natural elements such ( clay or mud ) that firms and detoxifies your skin by drawing out impurities and absorbing excess oil. The body mask is generously applied all over your body where it is left to dry for about 20 to 30 minutes. The mask you decide on may contain ingredients designed to address specific concerns. For example, caffeine, which can increase circulation and reduce the appearance of cellulite, may be added to the body mask. Or a treatment that may include alpha hydroxy acids, which aids in repairing sun damage and combat the signs of aging.

Tip: When making reservations at the spa, be sure to inform the receptionist of any allergies you have or might have to shellfish and/or iodine as many masks have seaweed or other types of ingredients that could contain allergens you are allergic to.

Body Wrap

Body Wrap

Similar to a body mask but with an added step of having your body wrapped in seaweed, sheets, Mylar ® , or another "cocooning" like material that is applied after a mask is applied. The idea with this procedure is to raise the body temperature, which helps boost circulation, open pores, and helps the mask to better absorb into your skin.

Tip: You may want to skip this step if you are claustrophobic as this step doesn't allow you to move freely, but you can ask to have your arms left out of the wrap which helps as well.

Dry Brushing

Dry Brushing

An ancient technique that involves brushing your skin with a natural bristle brush without any moisture or water (synthetic bristles are too harsh). This technique boots circulation while removing dead skin and also flushes toxins and even improves the appearance of cellulite. The therapist will start at your feet ( hope you are not too ticklish ) working up your body and brushing in circular motions towards the heart, which encourages natural lymphatic flow which is the body's system for boosting immunity and keeping fluids in balance. If you are going to receive other services like a body wrap, body mask or massage, expect this procedure to come first.

Tip: You can also learn how to use a dry brush and other devices, like the Clarisonic body brush or the Supracor bath mitt all from the comfort of your home, or hotel room.

Massage

Massage

There are many health benefits of getting a massage, from lymphatic drainage and improving circulation to reducing stress and easing pain. You will most likely find that a massage will enable you to relax and help you let go as the therapist works to help soothe your muscles and focus on specific concerns your have shared and there are no shortages to the different types of massage. Do keep in mind that a relaxation massage like the Swedish Ultimate Unwinder is much different from that of the Elemis Athletic Rub, which is much more deep of a massage. Rest assured, if you can't decided on what massage you want, the receptionist at the Spa can assist you with learning more about each one and deciding on one that fits your needs.

Tip: Try starting with the Swedish Relaxation Massage and if you feel like you need a more deep tissue massage, you can always upgrade.

DIY Body Scrub

DIY Body Treatments

I have found that there are many body treatments you can do at home. But, the easiest are body scrubs and dry brushing. Mentioned earlier for dry brushing, you can use anything that has a natural bristle or purchase the Supracor bath mitt or the Clarisonic body brush and you can make your own body scrubs. One of my favorites is the Lavender Vanilla Sugar Scrub.

What you will need:

Glass Jar

Sugar

Coconut ( or other ) oil

Vitamin E oil

Vanilla extract (real)

Lavender essential oil

How to make scrub

Ingredients

* 1 Cup Sugar

* 1/2 cup oil (coconut, almond, or olive oil works best)

* 1/2 teaspoon vitamin E oil

* 1/2 teaspoon real vanilla extract

* 15 drops of Lavender essential oil

Instructions

* Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix together thoroughly

* You can add more or less oil as to your liking

* Store in an airtight containing. Since this recipe doesn't contain any preservatives, it is best if used within a month or two.

How to use your scrub

* Scoop a small amount of scrub into your hands with a spoon.

* Scrub all over your feet, hands and wherever you would like to soften your skin.

* Allow to soak into your skin for several minutes (this is where you sit back and relax),

* Rinse and then pat dry with a towel.
